Ranada Prasad Shaha University Grading Guide 2026: GPA, CGPA

R. P. Shaha University (RPSU) in Narayanganj, Bangladesh, grades every course on a 4.00 scale that it publishes itself — and its rules are stricter than almost any other private university in the country. The graduation floor is a CGPA of 2.50 (not the usual 2.00), a failed course in the midterm locks you out of withdrawing from that course entirely, and you may retake any course graded C+ or below — but a single retake permanently disqualifies you from every academic honor the university offers. This is the first plain-English guide anywhere that explains RPSU’s official grading table, retake rules, probation system, scholarship thresholds, and Latin honors in one place, with every rule sourced from RPSU’s own published academic policies and worked examples with real numbers. If you study at RPSU (or plan to), this page answers the four questions that actually determine whether you stay enrolled: what happens to my CGPA if I retake, how many Fs can I survive, what is the real minimum CGPA to graduate, and can I still win a medal after a retake.

First, Make Sure You Have the Right RPSU

This sounds silly, but it is the single most common trap with this university. The name “RPSU” collides with institutions on two continents, and search engines happily mix them up:

  • R. P. Shaha University (RPSU), Narayanganj, Bangladesh — the private university this guide is about. A unit of the Kumudini Welfare Trust of Bengal, named after the philanthropist Ranada Prasad Shaha. Approved by the Ministry of Education on 14 March 2012 and by the UGC on 21 March 2012, with classes starting in 2014. The first private university in Narayanganj officially recognized by the UGC. Official website: rpsu.ac.bd.
  • Rajshahi University (ru.ac.bd) — a large public university. Several grade-policy PDFs in search results are Rajshahi’s, not RPSU’s. Not the same school.
  • Rivers State University (Nigeria) — some “RSU grading system” pages are about this Nigerian university. Wrong country entirely.
  • RGPV (India) — Scholaro’s 10-point-scale pages for Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya. Wrong country, wrong scale.

There is also a domain trap: RPSU’s own admissions portal and email use rpsu.edu.bd, but the canonical official website — the one that hosts the academic policies cited in this guide — is rpsu.ac.bd. A lookalike domain, rpsuacbd.com, exists and is not confirmed as official; do not treat it as the university’s site.

How to Calculate Your RPSU GPA With the Free Calculator

The fastest way to get your semester GPA is our free CGPA calculator, which supports the UGC Bangladesh grading scale that RPSU’s official table follows:

  1. Open the CGPA calculator and make sure the grade scale is set to UGC Bangladesh (this matches the grade points in RPSU’s official table below).
  2. Add one row per course, enter the course name and credit hours, and select the letter grade for each.
  3. The calculator multiplies each grade point by its credit hours, adds up all quality points, divides by total credits, and shows your Semester GPA instantly.

RPSU’s Official Grade Table (With the Remarks Nobody Reproduces)

RPSU publishes its grade table in the “Grade Requirement for Degree” section of its Academic Information and Policies page. Numerically it follows the UGC Bangladesh 4.00 scale — but it is RPSU’s own table, and it carries a Remarks column that generic calculator sites always strip out. Here it is, verbatim:

Numerical Grade Letter Grade Grade Point Remarks
80% and above A+ 4.00 Outstanding
75% to less than 80% A 3.75 Excellent
70% to less than 75% A− 3.50 Very good
65% to less than 70% B+ 3.25 Good
60% to less than 65% B 3.00 Satisfactory
55% to less than 60% B− 2.75 Above Average
50% to less than 55% C+ 2.50 Average
45% to less than 50% C 2.25 Below Average
40% to less than 45% D 2.00 Pass
Less than 40% F 0.00 Fail

Two things about this table surprise students. First, notice RPSU’s own wording: a B (3.00) is “Satisfactory” and a B− (2.75) is “Above Average” — that is RPSU’s phrasing, not a typo. Second, the fail line sits at 40%: anything below 40 earns an F worth 0.00. RPSU’s table also recognizes I (Incomplete), W (Withdrawal), and UW (Unofficial Withdrawal) — these are non-grade entries that do not enter GPA math (more on each below).

SGPA Formula: How the Math Works

RPSU does not publish its own calculation formula on its policy page — but like every Bangladeshi university, it computes GPA on a credit-weighted basis. This is the standard method:

SGPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours

Where quality points for one course = grade point × credit hours.

Your SGPA (Semester GPA) covers one semester. Your CGPA (Cumulative GPA) is the same formula across every semester you have completed: total quality points from all semesters divided by total credits attempted. A course you fail (F = 0.00) contributes zero quality points but its credits still count in the denominator — which is why one failed course hurts more than most students expect. For the full method, see our guide on how to calculate SGPA with worked examples.

Worked Example 1: An RPSU Semester at 3.50

Take a realistic RPSU semester mixing CSE and BBA-style courses — 5 courses, 15 credits, using the official table above:

Course Grade GP Credits Quality Points
CSE101 A+ 4.00 3 12.00
ENG102 A 3.75 3 11.25
MAT103 A− 3.50 3 10.50
PHY104 B+ 3.25 3 9.75
ECO105 B 3.00 3 9.00

Total quality points = 12.00 + 11.25 + 10.50 + 9.75 + 9.00 = 52.50. Total credits = 15. SGPA = 52.50 ÷ 15 = 3.50. This is exactly the result shown in the calculator screenshot above — try it yourself on the free calculator.

GPA vs CGPA: Which Number Matters When

At RPSU, the two numbers serve different official purposes, and confusing them costs students real money and real medals:

  • GPA (semester) decides your semester-based Academic Scholarship: you need a GPA of 3.00 (B) in every course, a regular load of at least 15 credits, and 80% attendance in each course.
  • CGPA (cumulative) decides whether you graduate at all (floor 2.50), whether you land on probation (below 2.50 after two semesters), and which Latin honor medal you receive (3.75+).

If you are rebuilding a weak record, read our guide on how to improve your CGPA — the target-future-average formula there works with RPSU’s 2.50 and 3.75 thresholds.

The Retake Rules — RPSU’s Most Generous Policy and Its Hidden Trap

RPSU’s retake policy is unusually generous on the surface: any student receiving C+ or below may retake or repeat a course. At most Bangladeshi private universities, retakes are reserved for failed (F) courses — RPSU lets you retake a C+ (2.50) just to chase a better grade. But three traps hide inside this generosity:

  • Trap 1: no B− retakes. The cutoff is C+ or below. A B− (2.75) is final — you cannot retake it, no matter how much it drags your CGPA.
  • Trap 2: the retake kills your medals forever. RPSU’s Academic Honors require no retaken courses — ever. The same C+ retake that fixes your CGPA permanently disqualifies you from Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, Summa Cum Laude, and every award tied to them.
  • Trap 3: you pay full tuition again. Full tuition fees must be paid for every retaken course.

The full verified retake mechanics, from RPSU’s official policy page:

  • F, I, W, and UW grades must be retaken in the immediate semester.
  • A single course may be retaken at most 3 times.
  • Five Fs and you are done with the freebies: the first four F grades on your transcript are excluded from CGPA computation once replaced — from the 5th F onward, the F counts in your CGPA permanently.
  • The newly earned grade is displayed alongside the F on the transcript — both are visible, but only the new grade counts toward CGPA (for the first four).
  • An F awarded by a disciplinary committee is never replaced or removed.

Worked Example 2: What an F Retake Actually Does to Your CGPA

Take a 5-course semester (3 credits each) where a student earns A, B+, C, D, and F:

Course Grade GP Credits Quality Points
CSE101 A 3.75 3 11.25
ENG102 B+ 3.25 3 9.75
MAT103 C 2.25 3 6.75
PHY104 D 2.00 3 6.00
ECO105 F 0.00 3 0.00

Before the retake: 33.75 ÷ 15 = 2.25 SGPA — and note the F’s 3 credits are dragging the denominator down while contributing nothing.

Now the student retakes ECO105 the immediate next semester and earns an A− (3.50). Assuming this is one of the student’s first four Fs, RPSU excludes the old F from the CGPA computation and counts the new grade: (11.25 + 9.75 + 6.75 + 6.00 + 10.50) = 44.25 ÷ 15 = 2.95. Both grades stay visible on the transcript — the recovery is real, but the F never fully disappears from the record.

Now imagine the same student has already burned four F-replacements earlier in their degree. This fifth F counts in the CGPA even after the retake. That single rule is the difference between a recoverable semester and a permanent hole — and it is the reason RPSU’s retake generosity has a hard edge.

Withdrawal Grades: W, UW, and the Midterm Trap

RPSU recognizes an official withdrawal — grade W — processed through the Registration office with your advisor’s approval, within the Academic Calendar’s withdrawal dates. But two rules make withdrawal dangerous territory:

  • The midterm trap: once you receive an F in the midterm examination, withdrawal is no longer allowed. Fail the midterm and RPSU locks the exit door — you must finish the course and live with the result (or retake it later, at full tuition).
  • The scholarship/honors forfeit: any dropped or withdrawn course — official (W) or unofficial (UW) — makes you ineligible for all scholarships, academic honors, and awards.

UW (Unofficial Withdrawal) appears alongside W in the retake and honors clauses, but RPSU publishes no exact definition of it — treat an unofficial withdrawal as an administrative penalty grade and assume it counts against you everywhere an F would. RPSU also publishes no definition, procedure, or deadline for resolving an Incomplete (I) grade, so if you carry an I, resolve it with your department immediately rather than assuming a standard deadline.

Probation, Dismissal, and the 2.50 Graduation Floor

This is the section RPSU students cannot afford to skim. The minimum CGPA for an undergraduate degree at RPSU is 2.50 — materially higher than the 2.00 floor common at most Bangladeshi private universities. The probation mechanics, from the official policy page:

  • CGPA below 2.50 after the first two semesters → placed on probation for the next two semesters. Fail to raise your CGPA to 2.50 or above → dismissal.
  • CGPA falls below 2.50 in any later semester → probation again.
  • The policy also states that “students who fail to achieve a GPA of 2.50 within three semesters will be dismissed” — the overlapping phrasing is genuinely confusing on RPSU’s own page, so confirm your exact standing with the registrar if you are near the line.
  • Dismissed students may be re-admitted into another program with university permission — not the same one.
  • The degree must be completed within a maximum of 12 semesters/terms.

Worked Example 3: the probation timeline in practice

Say a student finishes semester 1 with a CGPA of 2.30 and semester 2 with 2.42. After two semesters, the CGPA is below 2.50 → probation for semesters 3 and 4. To climb from 2.42 to 2.50 across two semesters (say 30 credits already completed), the student needs the next semesters’ GPA to average roughly 2.60+ — achievable, but every C or D makes it harder, because the denominator keeps growing. If semester 4 closes with the CGPA still under 2.50, RPSU dismisses the student. The practical lesson: probation semesters are not the time for experimental course loads — they are the time for the courses you can reliably pass at B or above.

No Dean’s List — RPSU Has Latin Honors Instead

Students who search for “RPSU Dean’s List” will find nothing, because it does not exist. RPSU awards Latin honors instead, and the bar is brutal:

Honor CGPA Range Medal
Cum Laude 3.75 – 3.84 Bronze
Magna Cum Laude 3.85 – 3.94 Silver
Summa Cum Laude 3.95 – 4.00 Gold

The CGPA is only the entry ticket. Every honors candidate must ALSO be a regular full-time student with no grade lower than B+ anywhere on the transcript, no F, I, W, or UW, no dropped courses, no retaken courses, SSC/HSC GPA of 4.00 or above, and at least 60% of credits earned at RPSU. One retaken C+, one dropped course, one W in any semester — and the medals are permanently out of reach, no matter what your CGPA becomes.

RPSU also awards the Chancellor’s Award (the Summa Cum Laude graduate with the best character and extracurricular record, one per program), the Vice Chancellor’s Award (best thesis, design project, or internship report), and the Chairman’s Award (voluntary service, minimum CGPA 3.20, regular full-time student).

Scholarship Thresholds: 3.00 in Every Course, Not Just Overall

RPSU’s semester-based Academic Scholarship is a waiver on tuition fees (not admission or other charges), and the criteria are per-course strict:

  • GPA 3.00 (B) in EACH course — a 3.50 semester average with one C+ does NOT qualify.
  • Regular full-time load of at least 15 credits.
  • No F, I, W, or UW; no dropped semesters; no disciplinary action.
  • 80% attendance in each course — even with perfect grades, attendance below 80% kills the scholarship.
  • Not applicable for improvement/retake/internship/project/dissertation/viva courses.

Renewal is even tougher: CGPA 3.75 or above, no F/I/W/UW, no retakes or drops, over 80% attendance, enrolled in all courses in the preceding and subsequent trimesters, and regular full-time status. The 3.75 renewal line is exactly the Cum Laude line — RPSU’s scholarship and honors systems are designed around the same elite tier.

Attendance: The 80% Rule and the Five-Absence Drop

RPSU expects at least 80% attendance in lectures, tutorials, and practicals. Two consequences follow from the official policy:

  • Five consecutive absences → you are dropped from the course.
  • Below 80% attendance → ineligible for the semester scholarship, regardless of grades.

Attendance is checked per course, and your instructor is required to inform you of the consequences of absence — if you are unsure where you stand in a course, ask before the fifth absence, not after.

Semester or Trimester? RPSU’s Terminology, Explained

RPSU’s own official documents use “semester” and “trimester” interchangeably: the scholarship renewal clause requires enrollment during the preceding and subsequent trimesters, disciplinary suspensions apply for the next trimester/semester, the degree must finish within 12 semesters, and admission tests are advertised for spring and fall semesters. The 12-term cap over a 4-year degree works out to three terms per year — consistent with a trimester rhythm — but only spring and fall intakes are publicly advertised. For planning purposes, treat the academic year as three terms (Spring/Summer/Fall), count your 12-term clock accordingly, and confirm the current term calendar with the registrar.

What RPSU Has Not Published (Read This Before You Guess)

Honesty is part of this guide. RPSU does not publish the following, and any article that states them is guessing:

  • Marks distribution weights — no official table of class-test/attendance/midterm/final percentages exists on the site. Your course outline sets the weights for each course.
  • Incomplete (I) grade procedure — the grade exists in policy clauses, but no definition, resolution procedure, or deadline is published.
  • UW (Unofficial Withdrawal) definition — the code appears in retake/honors clauses with no published definition.
  • GPA formula — the standard credit-weighted formula in this guide is the UGC-standard method, not an RPSU-published formula.

Whenever a rule above affects your enrollment, verify it directly with your department or the registrar rather than relying on any third-party page — including this one.

Common Mistakes RPSU Students Make

  1. Retaking a B−. The retake cutoff is C+ or below — a B− cannot be retaken. Plan your semester around protecting grades at B or above instead.
  2. Retaking a C+ for CGPA while dreaming of a medal. The retake raises your CGPA and permanently disqualifies you from every Latin honor. Decide which one you actually want before you file the retake.
  3. Counting on withdrawal after a bad midterm. An F in the midterm bans withdrawal. If the midterm went badly, your options are finish-and-retake or finish-and-recover — there is no quiet exit.
  4. Assuming the 5th F works like the first four. From the 5th F onward, the F counts in your CGPA even after a successful retake. Track your lifetime F count like you track your money.
  5. Using the wrong university’s rules. Rajshahi University PDFs, Nigerian “RSU” pages, and Indian RGPV 10-point scales all rank for RPSU-adjacent searches. None of them apply to Narayanganj.
  6. Trusting the rpsuacbd.com lookalike domain. Official policy lives at rpsu.ac.bd. If a “grading policy” document comes from anywhere else, verify it before acting on it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I retake a B− or C+ course at RPSU to raise my CGPA?

You may retake any course graded C+ or below — but not a B− or above. Remember the price: any retaken course permanently disqualifies you from Academic Honors, and you pay full tuition for the retake.

I got an F and retook it — does the F still hurt my CGPA?

Your first four Fs are excluded from CGPA computation once replaced (the new grade counts; both grades stay visible on the transcript). From the 5th F onward, the F counts in your CGPA even after retaking. A disciplinary-committee F is never replaced.

What happens if my CGPA drops below 2.50?

Below 2.50 after your first two semesters means probation for the next two semesters; if you have not reached 2.50 by then, you are dismissed. A later drop below 2.50 triggers probation again. You need a minimum CGPA of 2.50 to graduate.

Does RPSU have a Dean’s List?

No. RPSU awards Latin honors instead — Cum Laude (3.75–3.84, Bronze), Magna Cum Laude (3.85–3.94, Silver), and Summa Cum Laude (3.95–4.00, Gold) — with no grade below B+, no retakes, and no F/I/W/UW anywhere on your record.

I missed five classes in a row — what happens?

You are dropped from the course. Separately, attendance below 80% in any course makes you ineligible for the semester scholarship, even with qualifying grades.

I failed my midterm — can I withdraw from the course?

No. An F in the midterm bans withdrawal from that course. And any official or unofficial withdrawal forfeits all scholarships and academic honors.

How many years do I have to finish my degree at RPSU?

The degree must be completed within a maximum of 12 semesters/terms. RPSU’s documents use “trimester” and “semester” interchangeably; with three terms per year, that is roughly four calendar years.

The Short Version

R. P. Shaha University runs one of the strictest grading regimes among Bangladesh’s private universities: its own published 4.00 table (80% = A+), a 2.50 graduation floor, probation-to-dismissal mechanics, a midterm-F withdrawal ban, a 5th-F lifetime cap, and Latin honors that demand no grade below B+ and zero retakes. The retake policy looks generous — C+ or below may be repeated — but every retake costs full tuition and your medal eligibility. Run your numbers on the free CGPA calculator before each semester, keep your lifetime F count in your head, and never let a midterm F surprise you. The students who thrive at RPSU are not the ones with the most talent — they are the ones who read the rulebook before the rules read them.
