NSU vs IUB vs BRACU Grading Compared: Which Is Toughest?

Three friends all score 88% in the same subject. One studies at NSU, one at IUB, one at BRACU. The NSU student gets a B+ worth 3.3 grade points. The IUB and BRACU students get A− worth 3.7. Same marks, same effort, a 0.4 grade-point gap — and that gap repeats in almost every course, every semester, until graduation. This is why “NSU vs IUB vs BRACU grading” is one of the most argued topics in Bangladesh’s private-university scene: all three run on the same 4.0 scale, but the scales are not the same at all. This guide puts the official 2026 grading tables side by side, explains the retake, probation, and transfer rules nobody compares, and answers the question with data, not rumors.

The Short Answer: Which University Is Toughest?

  • NSU is the toughest by a clear margin. It demands 93+ for an A (vs 90+ at IUB and BRACU), and it is the only one of the three where 58% is an F. At every mark band, NSU converts to a lower grade point.
  • IUB and BRACU are nearly identical on grade boundaries — but IUB is slightly friendlier at the bottom: it fails only below 45%, while BRACU fails below 50%.
  • The student perception matches the data. In a widely shared January 2026 student discussion comparing five private universities, commenters independently ranked IUB easiest → AIUB → EWU → BRACU → NSU toughest — and the official tables back that ranking exactly.
  • An 88% student graduates with roughly a 3.3 at NSU and a 3.7 at IUB/BRACU — a gap that decides scholarships, probation, and graduate-school cutoffs.
  • The three differ even more on retakes: NSU counts your best grade, IUB counts your latest grade (a bad retake can replace a good one), and BRACU splits the two depending on whether you’re retaking an F or repeating for improvement.

Calculate Your CGPA the Fast Way

Comparing scales by hand is instructive once — doing it every semester is unnecessary. CGPAPro’s free CGPA calculator lets you add courses, enter credits, and pick letter grades; it multiplies grade points × credits, sums everything, and divides by total credits instantly. Use it to model “what if my marks were at NSU instead of IUB” scenarios before you make transfer or admissions decisions.

One warning when you use any calculator: make sure its grade-point mapping matches your university’s official table below. Generic calculators often apply one “Bangladesh private university” scale to all three — that lumped scale is wrong for NSU (93+ for A, fail below 60) and misleading for the rest. The official tables are what your registrar actually uses.

The Official Grade Tables, Side by Side

Everything below comes from the three universities’ own published policies, fetched and verified this week. We cite the source under each table so you can double-check anything that affects your standing.

North South University (NSU) — Official Grading Table 2026

Source: NSU official transcript format (Controller of Examinations) and the Academic Information and Policies document from the Registrar’s Office.

Marks (%) Letter Grade Grade Points
93 and above A 4.0
90 – 92 A− 3.7
87 – 89 B+ 3.3
83 – 86 B 3.0
80 – 82 B− 2.7
77 – 79 C+ 2.3
73 – 76 C 2.0
70 – 72 C− 1.7
67 – 69 D+ 1.3
60 – 66 D 1.0
Below 60 F 0.0

Two things define NSU’s table. First, the top is gated hard: a 92 is an A−, not an A. Second, the bottom is brutal: 59% is an F at NSU while it passes comfortably at IUB (C−, 1.7) and BRACU (C−, 1.7). D is the minimum passing grade — labelled “Poor,” but it earns credit. For the complete NSU breakdown including worked examples, see our NSU grading system guide.

Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) — Official Grading Table 2026

Source: IUB’s official Uniform Grading System notification (Controller of Examinations), reproduced in the university Greenbooks.

Marks (%) Letter Grade Grade Points
90 and above A 4.00
85 to below 90 A− 3.70
80 to below 85 B+ 3.30
75 to below 80 B 3.00
70 to below 75 B− 2.70
65 to below 70 C+ 2.30
60 to below 65 C 2.00
55 to below 60 C− 1.70
50 to below 55 D+ 1.30
45 to below 50 D 1.00
Below 45 F 0.00

IUB’s defining feature is generosity at the bottom: a 46% is still a passing D worth 1.0, where it would be a flat F at both NSU and BRACU. D (“Deficient Passing”) is the minimum passing grade. The full policy picture — including the retake-count rules that differ across Greenbook editions — is in our IUB grading system guide.

BRAC University (BRACU) — Official Grading Table 2026

Source: BRACU’s official Policies and Procedures page, “Grading System” section (introduced Fall 2020). Note the page contains duplicated old and new policy blocks — we cite the current one.

Marks (%) Letter Grade Grade Points
97 – 100 A+ 4.0
90 to below 97 A 4.0
85 to below 90 A− 3.7
80 to below 85 B+ 3.3
75 to below 80 B 3.0
70 to below 75 B− 2.7
65 to below 70 C+ 2.3
60 to below 65 C 2.0
57 to below 60 C− 1.7
55 to below 57 D+ 1.3
52 to below 55 D 1.0
50 to below 52 D− 0.7
Below 50 F 0.0

BRACU’s table has two quirks worth knowing. First, the A+ (97+) is purely honorific — it’s worth the same 4.0 as a regular A, so it looks great on a transcript but changes nothing mathematically. Second, D− is worth just 0.7 — the weakest passing grade of the three universities. Our BRACU grading system guide covers the full policy including the retake/repeat split.

The Same Marks, Three Different CGPAs (the Table Everyone Shares)

This is the comparison that settles the debate. Take the same percentage and read across:

Marks NSU IUB BRACU
95% A (4.0) A (4.0) A (4.0)
92% A− (3.7) A (4.0) A (4.0)
88% B+ (3.3) A− (3.7) A− (3.7)
82% B− (2.7) B+ (3.3) B+ (3.3)
76% C (2.0) B (3.0) B (3.0)
68% D+ (1.3) C+ (2.3) C+ (2.3)
58% F (0.0) C− (1.7) C− (1.7)
52% F (0.0) D+ (1.3) D (1.0)
46% F (0.0) D (1.0) F (0.0)
44% F (0.0) F (0.0) F (0.0)

Read that table carefully and three patterns jump out. NSU is tougher at every single band — there is no mark percentage where NSU gives a better grade point than the other two. The gap widens in the middle: a 76% student is “average” (2.0) at NSU but a solid B (3.0) at IUB and BRACU — a full grade point per credit. And the 58% row is the starkest of all: failure at NSU, a passing 1.7 at the other two. IUB and BRACU only diverge in the 45–52% band, where IUB’s lenient fail threshold gives it the edge.

Worked Example: One Student, Three Transcripts

To see what this means over a real semester, take a student who scores 88, 82, 76, 68 and 58 across five 3-credit courses — 15 credits total. The GPA formula is the same everywhere: GPA = Σ (grade points × credits) ÷ total credits. Only the grade points differ:

Marks NSU grade (pts × 3) IUB/BRACU grade (pts × 3)
88 B+ → 3.3 × 3 = 9.90 A− → 3.7 × 3 = 11.10
82 B− → 2.7 × 3 = 8.10 B+ → 3.3 × 3 = 9.90
76 C → 2.0 × 3 = 6.00 B → 3.0 × 3 = 9.00
68 D+ → 1.3 × 3 = 3.90 C+ → 2.3 × 3 = 6.90
58 F → 0.0 × 3 = 0.00 C− → 1.7 × 3 = 5.10

NSU: total grade points 27.90 ÷ 15 credits = GPA 1.86.
IUB/BRACU: total grade points 42.00 ÷ 15 credits = GPA 2.80.

Identical marks produce a 0.94 GPA gap — and at NSU, that 1.86 puts the student on probation (below the 2.00 line), while the same performance is a comfortable 2.80 at IUB and BRACU. This is why “which university is toughest” isn’t a vanity debate: the same student profile gets probation at one school and a solid standing at another. When you project your own recovery path, run the numbers with the CGPA calculator instead of guessing — and double-check which scale the calculator is using.

Retake Rules Compared: The #1 Thing Students Get Wrong

Ask students how retakes work and you’ll hear confident wrong answers. The three universities genuinely have three different philosophies — and choosing the wrong strategy can cost you real CGPA:

NSU: your BEST grade counts

At NSU, you may retake any course where you earned B or lower (yes — even a passed course). The best grade you ever earn in the course counts toward your CGPA; the older attempt stays visible on your transcript but its grade point is recorded as 0.0 for CGPA purposes. A course may normally be retaken up to three times; a fourth attempt needs Vice-Chancellor approval.

The practical meaning: a retake at NSU cannot hurt you. If you earned a C, retook, and got a D — the C still counts. That makes NSU the safest place to attempt a grade repair, even though it’s the toughest place to earn the original grade. Source: NSU Academic Information and Policies (Registrar’s Office).

IUB: your LATEST grade counts — the opposite

At IUB, when you retake, the latest grade earned counts toward your CGPA, replacing whatever came before. The failed grade stays on your transcript. This is the mirror image of NSU — and it makes retakes at IUB a calculated risk: if your retake goes worse than the original, the worse grade is the one that counts. A student who retakes a C hoping for a B but earns a D has just talked their CGPA down.

One caution: IUB’s retake-count limits differ across Greenbook editions (older editions allowed one retake, newer ones two, with different semester windows), and the current rule is that a course graded F — or graded below a prerequisite minimum — must be retaken in the immediately following semester. Failing the same course three times cancels your admission. Because editions conflict, check the Greenbook of your own catalogue of entry before you plan a retake. Sources: IUB Greenbooks via the academic repository.

BRACU: retake (F courses) vs repeat (improvement) — two different rules

BRACU is the only one of the three with an asymmetric system, and it trips up nearly everyone:

  • Retake = a course with an F grade. You may retake it twice (a third attempt is possible by exception through the HoD/Dean and Registrar), and the best grade counts toward your CGPA.
  • Repeat = retaking to improve a non-F grade. Allowed once, within 2 semesters of the original enrolment, with no cap on the new grade — but the latest grade counts, exactly like IUB.

So at BRACU, retaking a failed course is safe (best counts), but repeating a passed course carries the IUB-style risk (latest counts — a worse repeat replaces your original). Know which bucket your course falls into before you register. Source: BRACU Policies and Procedures (current blocks).

Probation & Dismissal: How Long Before They Kick You Out?

This is the high-anxiety question, and the countdowns differ in ways that matter when you’re choosing a university or planning a recovery:

  • NSU: CGPA below 2.00 → probation. You get a maximum of 3 consecutive semesters to raise it back to 2.00. Fail, and in the 4th semester you are dismissed (“excluded”) — and excluded students cannot re-admit to NSU, ever, not even with a new ID. The minimum CGPA to graduate is 2.00, and an undergraduate degree must be completed within 6 years of first enrolment. Source: NSU Registrar’s Probation FAQ (Spring 2026).
  • IUB: CGPA below 2.00 → probation. If your CGPA is below 1.5 for two successive probation semesters, your admission is cancelled. If it’s between 1.5 and 2.0, you get one more semester; reach 2.00 by the end of the third probation semester or the admission is cancelled. Graduation floor: 2.00. Source: IUB Greenbooks.
  • BRACU (current policy, students enrolled Summer 2022 onward): CGPA below 2.00 → probation, with 3 consecutive semesters to reach 2.00 (2 semesters for Pharmacy and LLB). Failure leads to consideration for withdrawal, subject to Dean/HoD review — continuation is possible in exceptional circumstances (e.g. serious illness), so it’s a review rather than an automatic dismissal. Graduation floor under the current block: 2.00. Source: BRACU Policies and Procedures.

⚠️ A warning about BRACU’s official page: it contains duplicated old and new policy blocks that contradict each other — an older block says graduation needs CGPA 2.50 with probation below 2.50. The current (Fall-2020-scale, Summer-2022-probation) blocks say 2.00. Use the current blocks and treat the 2.50 text as legacy. If a BRACU advisor quotes you 2.50, ask them to confirm against the current policies page — this confusion costs students real anxiety.

Transfer Credits: What Follows You Between Universities?

Thinking of switching — say, escaping NSU’s curve for IUB’s friendlier boundaries? Here’s what happens to your credits:

  • BRACU accepts a maximum of 30 credits in transfer from institutions with equivalent curriculum and grading, provided you earned at least a B+ in each eligible course. Transfers are evaluated case by case.
  • NSU counts accepted transfer credits toward your degree — but they are excluded from your CGPA calculation. You start your NSU CGPA from scratch, which is either a blessing or a curse depending on what you’re leaving behind.
  • IUB records transfer courses on your transcript alongside courses taken at IUB.
  • No published minimum-grade rule for incoming transfers at NSU or IUB was found in this research — BRACU’s B+ rule is the only one documented. If you’re planning a move, confirm with the receiving registrar in writing before you enrol.

6 Mistakes Students Make in This Comparison

  1. Using a generic “Bangladesh” scale for NSU. The internet’s #1 grading page shows NSU’s A at 95–100 — wrong; it’s 93+. And lumped “private university” scales ignore NSU’s fail-below-60 entirely. Always use the official per-university table.
  2. Assuming BRACU’s A+ gives you more than an A. The 97+ A+ is worth the same 4.0 as an A — honorific only. Chasing 97 when you’re at 91 gains you nothing mathematically.
  3. Retaking at IUB without a plan. Because the latest grade counts, a casual retake that goes badly replaces your original. Only retake at IUB when you’re genuinely prepared to beat the original grade.
  4. Mixing up BRACU’s retake and repeat rules. Retaking an F is safe (best counts); repeating a passed course is not (latest counts). Students regularly register for “improvement repeats” thinking they have NSU-style protection.
  5. Ignoring the BRACU 2.00-vs-2.50 contradiction. Advisors and old handouts still quote 2.50. Know which block is current so you don’t panic — or under-prepare.
  6. Treating “same 4.0 scale” as “same CGPA.” Boundaries differ so much that identical marks produce a ~0.94 GPA gap per semester (see the worked example). Compare boundaries, not scale labels.

7 Tips: Using This Comparison to Your Advantage

  1. Choosing a university? If two programs are otherwise equal, the grading boundary difference is a real four-year input: a 3.5 is structurally easier to reach at IUB/BRACU than at NSU. Weigh it alongside fees, faculty, and accreditation.
  2. At NSU: retake aggressively, since best-grade counts. You literally cannot hurt yourself by retaking a B-or-lower course — the policy is designed as a safety net. Use your three attempts deliberately.
  3. At IUB: retake only when prepared. Latest-grade counting makes a retake a bet on yourself. Prepare harder than you did the first time, or the retake backfires.
  4. At BRACU: label your action correctly. Is it a retake (F) or a repeat (improvement)? The answer decides whether “best” or “latest” counts. Get it in writing from the registrar if you’re unsure.
  5. Guard the 2.00 line like a lifeline. At all three universities, 2.00 is the probation trigger — and NSU’s “excluded forever” and IUB’s “admission cancelled” are genuinely terminal outcomes. Treat 2.30 as your personal floor.
  6. Project recoveries before you commit. Plug your planned retake grades into the CGPA calculator with the correct scale first — see exactly how many credits at what grades get you back above the line.
  7. If you’re transferring, run the CGPA math both ways. NSU excludes transfer credits from CGPA entirely — a fresh start, but your old 3.5 doesn’t follow you. BRACU requires B+ per transferred course. Decide with numbers, not feelings.

FAQs: NSU vs IUB vs BRACU Grading

Which is tougher — NSU, IUB, or BRACU?
NSU, by every official measure: 93+ for an A (vs 90+ elsewhere) and failure below 60% (vs 45% at IUB, 50% at BRACU). IUB is the friendliest overall, with BRACU effectively tied except at the very bottom. Student discussions rank them the same way: IUB easiest, NSU toughest.

My friend at IUB has a higher CGPA than me at NSU with similar marks. Why?
Different grade boundaries, not different effort. An 88% is B+ (3.3) at NSU but A− (3.7) at IUB; a 76% is C (2.0) at NSU but B (3.0) at IUB. Across a semester this compounds into a ~0.9 GPA gap — see the worked example above.

If I get an F and retake, which grade counts — and does the F stay on my transcript?
NSU: the best grade counts (older attempt stays visible at 0.0). IUB: the latest grade counts, and the F stays on the transcript. BRACU: best counts for F-retakes, latest counts for improvement repeats.

How many times can I retake a course?
NSU: 3 attempts (4th needs VC approval). BRACU: 2 retakes of an F (3rd by exception); 1 improvement repeat within 2 semesters. IUB: varies by Greenbook edition — check your catalogue of entry — and failing the same course 3 times cancels your admission.

How long does probation last before dismissal?
NSU: 3 consecutive semesters below 2.00 → excluded, with no re-admission ever. IUB: below 1.5 for two successive probation semesters → admission cancelled. BRACU (Summer 2022+): 3 semesters to reach 2.00, then a withdrawal review (exceptions possible).

Does BRACU’s A+ (97+) give extra grade points?
No — it’s worth the same 4.0 as an A. It’s an honor on the transcript, not a mathematical advantage.

Can I transfer from NSU to IUB/BRACU and keep my CGPA?
BRACU accepts up to 30 credits (minimum B+ per course, case by case). NSU counts accepted transfer credits toward the degree but excludes them from CGPA — you start fresh. IUB records transfer courses on the transcript. Confirm minimum-grade rules with the receiving registrar, since only BRACU publishes one.

Final Word

The “which is toughest” debate is settled by the official tables, not by campus rumor: NSU’s boundaries are the harshest at every mark band, IUB and BRACU are near-twins with IUB kinder at the bottom, and the retake philosophies invert the story — NSU’s best-grade counting is the most forgiving repair policy, while IUB’s latest-grade rule and BRACU’s retake/repeat split demand real strategy. Know your university’s real table (not the generic one), know which retake bucket you’re in, and guard the 2.00 line. Everything else is just arithmetic — and for the arithmetic, there’s always the calculator.
